He stares at a border fence that stands between him and his real home, picturing it as nothing more than “a piece of metal.” With the sun, the sea, the wind and a runaway bird as his symbols, he declares himself free in spirit long before his body ever crosses that line. Each chorus swells with images of dawn light, open ocean and limitless sky, turning his longing for liberty into an uplifting anthem you can’t help but sing along to.
Yet the song also carries a bittersweet twist. Fueled by love and hope, the young man finally sets out, singing so joyfully that he fails to hear the warning voice behind him.
