SONG MEANING

Droigts – a playful mash-up of the French words for rights (droits) and fingers (doigts) – is Eric Cantona’s fiery battle-cry against oppression. In a torrent of vivid images he lines up everyone who dares to speak out – political opponents, journalists, ordinary workers – and shows how they are paraded before “old hungry wolves” and “ugly hyenas” wearing judges’ robes. Trials are rigged, verdicts are pre-packed, and the so-called guardians of “universal justice” are nothing more than well-dressed puppets. Cantona paints a world where torture, humiliation, and life sentences are handed out while the powerful casually talk about peace and freedom at polished negotiation tables.

The chorus flips despair into cheeky defiance: when all human rights are stolen, we still have our fingers – perfect for giving a collective rude gesture to the “bandes de tordus” (crooked gangs) in charge. With its raw language and punk energy, the song invites listeners to laugh, seethe, and ultimately resist. “Droigts” is less a polite protest and more a sardonic shout-along that reminds us that even when everything else is stripped away, a small but potent symbol of rebellion remains literally at hand.
