beija-flor — hummingbird

Beija-flor literally translates to "flower-kisser," which is the beautiful Portuguese word for hummingbird. It's a charming and evocative term that paints a vivid picture.

In the song, the singer expresses a desire to be a "beija-flor na janela" (hummingbird in the window) for their loved one, symbolizing a gentle, constant, and delightful presence. It's a unique and tender metaphor for affection and devotion.

Feel the sunrise on your eyelids and the flutter of a hummingbird by your window. “Voa Voa” paints a picture of someone who wants to be every gentle delight in their lover’s day: the morning sun, a cup of mint tea, a sea-breeze memory, even the hammock that rocks them into calm. The lyrics celebrate spontaneous adventure ("pack your bags, let’s just go!") while wrapping it all in warm, beach-side affection.

Freedom and devotion dance together here. The repeated call, “voa, voa” (“fly, fly”), invites the beloved to roam as they wish, knowing the singer will patiently wait, collecting the lingering “perfume” of each visit. Every new dawn, without a single word, love is quietly reaffirmed. Melim turns everyday moments into musical confetti, reminding us that true affection gives wings and a soft place to land.

Melim is a Brazilian pop trio made up of siblings Rodrigo, Gabriela, and Diogo Melim, twins Rodrigo and Diogo plus their younger sister Gabi, all born and raised in NiterĂłi, in Rio de Janeiro state.

The group came together in 2015 and reached a national audience the following year as semifinalists on the Brazilian television competition "Superstar." Their self-titled debut album followed in 2018, filled with warm, acoustic-driven pop songs the three siblings wrote themselves.

Melim became known across Brazil for feel-good hits like "Meu Abrigo," "Ouvi Dizer," and "Gelo," blending pop melodies with gentle Brazilian singer-songwriter harmonies. That hopeful, easygoing spirit runs through their catalogue, wrapping simple wishes for peace and kindness in a breezy sound.
