SONG MEANING

Paulo De Carvalho’s “E Depois Do Adeus” is a heartfelt Portuguese ballad that begins with an identity crisis: “Quis saber quem sou / O que faço aqui.” The singer questions who he is and why he exists after a painful farewell, turning to the sea for answers. Yet the ocean offers only silence, mirroring the emptiness that follows a broken relationship and setting the stage for a journey through sorrow, nostalgia, and self-reflection.

Love in this song is a flower that blossoms, gets its petals removed, and inevitably fades. The narrator gains bliss, loses it, and is reborn through that very loss – “partir é morrer, como amar é ganhar e perder.” After the goodbye he is left alone with a “lugar a mais,” the literal space once filled by his partner. The track beautifully captures that lingering presence we feel right after love ends, while also carrying a historical footnote: its broadcast on 24 April 1974 signaled the start of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, turning a personal farewell into a national rebirth.
