Soolking sings, "F sari3 nokhrej min l'Afrique, Roma wala ntouma" (Quickly, I'll leave Africa, Rome or you). This line encapsulates the desperate hope and perilous journey of many young people seeking a better life, often risking everything to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. "Ya Lbahri" is Soolking speaking to the sea. In Algerian Arabic lbahri is the sea, the sailor, the thing that carries you away, and the whole song is a conversation with it: "oh sea, may God guide you, you forced me to flee and the blame is on you."
The story underneath is harga, the crossing. A young man decides to leave Africa on a small boat and reach Europe, and he says it plainly: "I go with no return." He is not romantic about it. He knows that dying at sea is suicide, that thousands have gone before him and been forgotten, that his own mother's prayers are the only ticket he really has. He goes anyway, because staying means being oppressed and mistreated with no future except the port.
Soolking moves between French and Algerian Arabic line by line, which is how the song holds two things at once: the pain said in his mother tongue, and the decision said in French. Soolking, born Abderraouf Deradji on December 10, 1989, in Staoueli near Algiers, Algeria, is one of the biggest stars to come out of the Algerian and French rap scenes. He grew up around music, his father was a percussionist, and he performed with a rock band as a teenager before moving to France in 2008.
He returned to Algeria and joined the rap group Africa Jungle under the name MC Sool, then went solo in 2016 and adopted the stage name Soolking, signing with Sofiane's label Affranchis Music. After early hits like "Milano" and "Guérilla," he broke through internationally with "Dalida," and released his debut album, Fruit du Démon, in November 2018, which went Gold in France.
Soolking's sound blends Algerian raï with rap, R&B, reggae, and pop, and his lyrics often move between French and Algerian Arabic in the same song, as they do here, reflecting his own journey between Algeria and France.
