Every genre teaches you a different Spanish. Salsa singers talk about life and legacy, reggaetón talks the way people text at 2am, and Dominican bachata comes with slang you won't find in any textbook.

So we picked songs across 15 genres. Each one comes with a line to listen for and what it actually means. Find the genre that sounds like you and start there.

Pop

Chantaje, Shakira and Maluma. A flirty power struggle where nobody wants to admit they care. Listen for "es una guerra de toma y dame", a war of take and give, which is how Spanish says give and take. Learn Chantaje, and if Maluma's half hooks you, here's how to learn Spanish with Maluma.

Bailando, Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno and Gente De Zona. Enrique, son of Julio Iglesias, teams up with Cuban artists for a song about one night of dancing. The opener "se me corta la respiración" literally means my breathing gets cut off, the Spanish way to say you take my breath away. Learn Bailando

La Tortura, Shakira and Alejandro Sanz. A 2005 duet about a couple who can't let go. "No pido que todos los días sean de sol" means I'm not asking for every day to be sunny, and it's a clean example of the subjunctive after "pedir". Learn La Tortura

Baila Conmigo, Selena Gomez and Rauw Alejandro. From Selena's 2021 Spanish-language album Revelación. The first line is basically about you: "Bebé, no sé si hablas mucho español", babe, I don't know if you speak much Spanish. Learn Baila Conmigo

Salsa

Vivir Mi Vida, Marc Anthony. A salsa cover of Khaled's "C'est la vie" by the New York-born son of Puerto Rican parents. The chorus is simple and repeats a lot, "voy a reír, voy a bailar", I'm going to laugh, I'm going to dance, so it's a great first song. Learn Vivir Mi Vida

La Vida Es Un Carnaval, Celia Cruz. The Queen of Salsa, the woman behind the famous shout of "¡Azúcar!" (sugar). Her 1998 classic tells anyone who thinks life is unfair that "hay que vivirla", you have to live it. Learn La Vida Es Un Carnaval

Reggaetón

Despacito, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. For years the most-viewed video on YouTube, until "Baby Shark Dance" took the crown. "Despacito" is "despacio" (slowly) plus the diminutive "-ito", so it means nice and slow. Learn Despacito

Mía, Bad Bunny and Drake. Yes, Drake sings in Spanish here. Listen for "pero tú puesta pa' mí": "puesta" means you're up for it, and "pa'" is the way everyone actually says "para". Learn Mía
