Juanjo Morgade is a Uruguayan singer working in plena, the fast tropical dance music that grew out of Montevideo and now fills the country's dancefloors. He came up as one of the scene's newer voices and records for the Uruguayan label One Play Latam.
Much of his catalogue is collaborative. He records alongside other Uruguayan plena and cumbia acts, including La Nueva Escuela, La Planta and La Dosis, and his songs are written for a room that is already dancing.
For a Spanish learner he is useful ear training. Rioplatense singing drops final s sounds, runs words together and leans on everyday Uruguayan street vocabulary, so his lyrics land close to how people actually talk.
