Chorus 1
Your love is yesterday's newspaper
That nobody bothers to read anymore
Sensational when it hit the stands in the early hours of the morning
By noon it was already confirmed news
And by the afternoon a forgotten story
Your love is yesterday's newspaper
Verse 1
It was the headline that filled an entire page
That's why they know you everywhere
Your name was a news clipping I kept
And I stuck it in my album of forgetfulness
Chorus 2
Your love is yesterday's newspaper
That nobody else bothers to read
The story that broke in the early hours
And the two of us became the news everybody spread
And by the afternoon a forgotten story
Your love is yesterday's newspaper
Take it now, Lola!
Outro 1
And why read yesterday's paper?
Hey, it's news everybody knows, I don't wanna read it
And why read yesterday's paper?
You were good for nothing, babe, and I tossed you in the trash can
And why read yesterday's paper?
Go away, walk away, get away from me, away from my side
And why read yesterday's paper?
You're La Prensa daily, word-of-mouth gossip
Shake it, double ugly!
Outro 2
And why read yesterday's paper?
Why would I read the story of a love I can't even believe?
And why read yesterday's paper?
I loved you, I had you, I kept you, but I don't love you anymore
And why read yesterday's paper?
I'm not going to your place, Polito, gimme a break and drop the chatter
And why read yesterday's paper?
In the album of my life, on a hidden page, that's where I found you
Outro 3
And why read yesterday's paper?
Come on, leave my side, sweet thing, I don't even wanna see you
And why read yesterday's paper?
What's wrong? You crying? Your soul is made of paper
And why read yesterday's paper?
And since paper holds anything, that's just how I treated you
And why read yesterday's paper?
Check out your own story, and then you'll understand

zafacón — trash can

Zafacón is a fun, regional word for "trash can," used primarily in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It's a great example of how Spanish varies by country.

In this classic salsa track, Héctor Lavoe uses the word to deliver a powerful diss. He sings "al zafacón yo te eché" (I threw you in the trash can), brutally dismissing a former lover as something worthless and disposable, just like yesterday's news.

Héctor Lavoe turns a bitter breakup into a brilliant headline metaphor in "Periódico De Ayer". His ex's love is yesterday's news: sensational when breaking in the early morning ("Sensacional cuando salió en la madrugada"), confirmed by noon ("A mediodía ya noticia confirmada"), and completely forgotten by the afternoon ("Y en la tarde materia olvidada"). Lavoe is entirely done caring. He tells her that nobody buys or reads yesterday’s print, tossing her memory straight into the trash: "al zafacón yo te eché" ("I threw you in the trash can", using zafacón, the everyday Puerto Rican word for a garbage bin).

As the rhythm kicks in, Lavoe fires off sharp insults and clever street lingo. He compares her gossipy reputation to New York's famous Spanish-language newspaper and the gossip mill: "Tú eres el diario La Prensa, Radio Bemba" ("You are La Prensa newspaper, Radio Big-Mouth", where Radio Bemba is Caribbean slang for rumors spread by word of mouth). He mocks her tears with "Tienes alma de papel" ("You have a soul of paper") and bluntly sums up the past: "Te quise, te tuve, te mantuve, pero ya no te quiero" ("I loved you, I had you, I supported you, but I don't love you anymore"). It is cold, hilarious, and rhythmically relentless.
