Ela Taubert’s “¿Quién Diría?” begins with someone who had made peace with being single. She planned to stop calling anyone every half hour, spend another year without looking for someone new, and avoid wasting her time. Then a new person appears and ruins that very sensible plan. “¿Y ahora cómo explico lo que está pasando?” [And now, how do I explain what’s happening?] she asks, because trying not to think about him is not working at all. The phrase “¿Quién diría?” means “Who would have thought?”, which fits the surprise perfectly: the person who swore she would not fall in love is suddenly thinking, “Eres tú quien faltaba” [You are the one who was missing].
There is a sweet risk in the chorus. She admits she has been “una experta en equivocarme” [an expert at making mistakes], yet with him, she wants to take a chance. She does not fully understand what he has done to her, but she knows she likes it. Even while he talks, she is distracted by the thought that she does not want anyone else. The repeated “Ya no quiero a nadie más” [I don’t want anyone else anymore] makes her change of heart wonderfully blunt. This is a song about losing control of a carefully protected plan and deciding that, this time, falling in love might be worth the risk.
